About the Geological Survey

Since its foundation in 1873, the main institutional task of the Geological Survey of Italy is the realization of the geological map of the country. After the completion of the 1:100,000 scale geological cartographic series, was launched a second series of geological and geothematic cartography at a scale of 1:50,000, still in progress.

In this long time interval, the activities of the Geological Survey of Italy have diversified, covering all the issues of geological knowledge of the territory for basic researches and environmental protection.

The Geological Survey of Italy is now a Department of ISPRA, the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research: the dissemination of geological knowledge, that is one of its current main objectives, is implemented through the publication of geological maps, geological guidelines and scientific journals.
